Evangelism Moment
Evangelism can seem scary, but it's really just a matter of telling someone else about your best friend and inviting them to meet Him. Following are the Evangelism ideas heard during the Evangelism Moment during church.
- Bring a friend to Church: not just inviting, but bringing: "Hey, let's get together Sunday. I'll pick you up, we'll go to church together, and then we can have brunch. How about I pick you up at quarter to nine?" You'd be amazed how many people don't go just because they don't want to go alone. (6/1/03)
- Use church as a conversation piece: "Our church just had VBS this week, and we had 50 kids there. With all the bad news going around, it's nice to see kids hearing some good news. Some of them were really excited that they can live forever and don't have to do anything to earn it." (6/15/03)
- When you talk to someone about the latest obituary or funeral, if the deceased is a Christian, express your faith in the resurrection. "I can't wait to see him again," or, "It's a real comfort to know he had saving faith in Jesus so we know he's in heaven." If you don't know about the person's faith, you can say, "I hope he knew Jesus died for him." (7/6/03)
- When you mail your bills, use "Assurance of Heaven" tracts for security papers to hide the check. We have plenty in the back. Take some home! They also work well when you send cards for birthay, Christmas, and the like. You can put a note in there and say, "I got these from our church. It's a good reminder for all of us." (7/20/03)
- If you have e-mail, there's a "Signature" function in all e-mail applications that will automatically put your name at the bottom of every message. You can add a Gospel message to the bottom of your signature, and it'll go out in every e-mail. Watch the church signboard or e-mails from me for ideas on what to say there. If you use a Bible verse, write out the verse, not just the location. People won't go look it up. (8/3/03)
- Watch your neighborhood. When new people move in, stop by with a plate of cookies and a church brochure. If you can, help them haul boxes & furniture off the truck. (9/7/03)
- If you have a friend in the hospital or going through some other trouble, visit them, and offer to have your pastor visit them. (9/21/03)
- Carry a tract in your pocket. (We have them in the narthex.) When you leave a tip at a restaurant, leave the tract with it. The Gospel is the best tip you could ever give! (10/5/03)
- Has a non-Christian friend ever asked you: How was your weekend? More than likely, you answered something like: Great. The weather was as good as it can get. Maybe you should have said, You know, my pastor preached this awesome sermon on Sunday. Would you like for me to tell you about it? (10/5/03)
- Talk to your employer about offering a staff Bible Study, either during lunch, during a coffee break, or before or after a shift. There are over 10,000 workplace Bible study and prayer groups in the U.S. Some companies have even hired chaplains, intercessors, and prayer leaders. If you don't feel comfortable leading it, I'd be willing to help you get it going. (10/19/03)
- Print out this form, cut the strips at the bottom, and post it to a public bulletin board. Or, invite a friend to come with you to Basic Bible Teachings Class. (11/2/03)
- Luther: The Movie is coming to Manchester this week: Nov. 21-25. Take a friend!
- Sign up for our computer class with a friend. Even if you know computers well, your friend will learn about Jesus in the process.
- Invite a friend to Christmas services.
- Have you noticed those extra envelopes in your offering envelopes box? Those are included to give you additional ideas how to support ministries with your gifts.
- This year, we're sharing Lent services with Our Savior again. They are well attended, and we have a time of fellowship afterward. Invite someone to come with you, and offer to do the driving. (2/1/04)
- The Passion of Christ movie opens February 25. Find out where it's playing, and invite a friend to the movie. (Locations are listed on the website.) 2/15/04
- The subject of so-called "gay marriage" has been in the news lately. If you discuss it with your friends and family, make a point of saying something like, "It's not right, but at the same time, Jesus died for that sin as much as any other sin." (3/7/04)
- When you use the word "God" in conversation, say "Jesus" instead. It sends a message of Who that God is. (3/21/04)
- If you notice someone hasn't been in church lately, call them and see if everything's okay. Don't be "church police," but let them know you care and that you miss them. (5/2/04)
- Some people think we need to cover up some of our teachings, like Close Communion, but those teachings are for the benefit of all and are nothing to be ashamed of. Don't be afraid of sharing the whole truth. (6/20/04)
- Think about the way you talk. Consider the difference between "Thank goodness" and "I'm thankful to Jesus." Or, "Fortunately" vs. "Thankfully." Your word choice can send a powerful message. (7/18/04)
- If you go visit family or friends for the weekend, find out in advance where you can attend church when you go. If your host attends a church, go with them, or else check with me or look on our Synod's website, LCMS.org, for a Missouri Synod congregation in the area you're visiting, and invite your hosts to go with you. (8/1/04)
- Make a point of being in Bible Class & personal study so youll have the answers to questions & comments you hear. (9/5/04)
- Ask yourself: What is keeping me from sharing my faith with others? Sit down and write a list. Then pray and ask God to remove those roadblocks. (10/3/04)
- Think of creative ways to use Halloween for Christ. If you carve pumpkins, carve an extra one with a cross. If you hand out candy, attach a Good News card to each piece. (10/17/04)
- Thanksgiving is coming. When you talk about what you're thankful for, make a point of mentioning Jesus' sacrifice in your place on the cross. And don't forget to tell people to Whom you're thankful! (11/7/04)
- Use Good News Cards as gift tags, filling in the person's name for whom the gift is. (12/5/04)
- Invite someone to our children's Christmas program. (12/19/04)
- How often do you have to give your address & phone number to people? Have some business cards made up with your contact information and a Gospel statement, and be ready to hand them out. (1/2/05)
- When you return an item to the library or video store, put a tract in the book or case. (1/16/05)
- It’s Lent, and we have Wednesday evening Lent services with fellowship afterward. Why not invite a friend to attend a service with you? (2/20/05)
